Dear David & Edel:

Great blog - far better than most I've read! Excellent photographs, too - I particularly enjoyed the one immediately above - cats on one side, pelicans on the other . . . I've had days that felt like that.

We're looking at Chile, Argentina - or both - for our next big adventure, and I thank you for the extra bit of inspiration.

Happy trails!

Hi guys, this is hilarious!! I have to say my favorite by far is the eggplant with corporal punishment. Please, please tell me that you actually ordered it. I can only imagine how much you guys are laughing on your trip. We just came back from SA where we were in stitches half the time because of the language. Afrikaans is just too funny for dutch people, very hard to keep a straight face ;)
Hope you're doing well. (And although I haven't left a lot of comments please keep updating the blog; it's so much fun to read!)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for all the comments - the North Sentinel clip was a great find, and I shall certainly look for the "Central Potato Research Institute" next time I go to Shimla :-)
If you want to hunt down some more of the places in GE here's a little Google Maps app I hacked together that shows the route: http://david.tryse.net/map2.php

All the best,

And here I was in Athens yesterday complaining about the taxi drivers and vowing to never ever take a taxi in my life again. Kept my word on day 1 and took the metro to the TP office. Obviously, there is no metro station close to TP, so I ended up walking for 20 minutes, but still... I was happy to not have to take a taxi. The metro to the airport is currently closed, so I took another metro line, then switched to a suburban rail solution and managed to get to the airport as well without the use of taxis... So far, so good.

So you can see my dilemma now... A country where ANY type of bus, state operated or privately operated has the 'Athens taxi feel', but then multiplied by 500... brrrr... shivers down my spine.

Maybe when you guys get back you want to help me write a book about the best tourist traps in the world? From the big ones, like your "Taj Mahal experience", or well... "Italy" to the smaller ones (Prague's 'You have to buy a photography permit in order to take pictures inside a dark building, but tripods and flash are not allowed even with permit'). I really think there's a market for a book like that.

And finally... (puts on his ironical hat) thanks for putting the concept and accompanying pictures of 'dying of an overdose of aphrodisiacs' in my brain. It's been haunting me for days... Life will never be the same again.

And here I was in Athens yesterday complaining about the taxi drivers and vowing to never ever take a taxi in my life again. Kept my word on day 1 and took the metro to the TP office. Obviously, there is no metro station close to TP, so I ended up walking for 20 minutes, but still… I was happy to not have to take a taxi. The metro to the airport is currently closed, so I took another metro line, then switched to a suburban rail solution and managed to get to the airport as well without the use of taxis… So far, so good.

So you can see my dilemma now… A country where ANY type of bus, state operated or privately operated has the ‘Athens taxi feel’, but then multiplied by 500… brrrr… shivers down my spine.

Maybe when you guys get back you want to help me write a book about the best tourist traps in the world? From the big ones, like your “Taj Mahal experience”, or well… “Italy” to the smaller ones (Prague’s ‘You have to buy a photography permit in order to take pictures inside a dark building, but tripods and flash are not allowed even with permit’).
Read some stuff about the Sentinelese... Interesting croud and so funny to see what the Civilized World thinks is appropriate for making 'First Contact'. In a way, I'm glad we didn't yet get embarassed by a true First Contact with an alien species... Can you imagine a technologically superior race hovering one of their space craft above North Bull Island and the Dublin Mayor deciding to "win their friendship by making friendly gestures and offering lots of gifts"... In the below paragraph, just replace 'Sentinelese by Alien Visitors and you can imagine that it would not go down that well with our extraterrestrial visitors either...

"In the spring of 1974, North Sentinel was visited by a film crew that was shooting a documentary titled Man in Search of Man, along with a few anthropologists, some armed policemen, and a photographer for National Geographic. In the words of one of the scientists, their plan was to "win the natives' friendship by friendly gestures and plenty of gifts." As the team's motorized dinghy made its way through the reefs toward shore, some natives emerged from the woods. The anthropologists made friendly gestures. The Sentinelese responded with a hail of arrows. The dinghy proceeded to a landing-spot out of arrow range, where the policemen, dressed in padded armor, disembarked and laid gifts on the sand: a miniature plastic automobile, some coconuts, a tethered live pig, a child's doll, and some aluminum cookware. Then they returned to the dinghy and waited to observe the natives' reaction to the gifts. The natives' reaction was to fire more arrows, one of which hit the film director in the left thigh. The man who had shot the film director was observed laughing proudly and walking toward the shade of a tree, where he sat down. Other natives were observed spearing the pig and the doll and burying them in the sand. They did, however, take the cookware and the coconuts with evident delight."

Shimla... one of the few locations I've managed to track down in Google Earth... I think it's the correct Shimla, since GE mentions a 'Central Potato Research Institute', and that sounds very much like the thing the British would build in their 'Summer Administration Centre'. Use the winter time well and study spuds while you're at it.

You see, this I would actually enjoy, to be honest. I would want to be the driver myself however and not put my fate into the hands of someone else. But that's just me. So the stories about the wiper-less bus racing around in the dark creep me out more than the dodgy little roads you encountered during the jeep trip. In my head I'm picturing it as: 'similar to our 'driving on bare rocks with a Peugeot 205 in the dark depths of Southern Italy' experience, but then for days and days'... Ok, it is a bit creepy... :-)

Hey Mr & Mrs. Tryse,

Just spent a nice evening getting updated on all your adventures. What an amazing experience. The video of the 'road trip' is too scary to watch! Love the pictures. Those carvings on the temples are certainly special! The both of you look soooo relaxed in every single picture. And yes of course.. am a tiny bit jealous. Then again, I can't picture myself on that bus.. ever!

Enjoy enjoy enjoy.

Hugs,
Yvonne

A 10-day SILENT meditation retreat? I can't wait to hear how that went! I mean, David being from the vast expanses of Middle Sweden where in the busier tourist times of the year, you tend to actually meet someone every day or 6, yes... I can see how he could last 10 days. But Edel? I'm now guessing she misread the '10-day silent meditation retreat' as '10-day steamroom and massage relaxation retreat'. Or maybe the '10-minute silent meditation retreat'... So tell me, how long did she last? My bet is on 3,5 minutes. Not counting the first accidental 'Oh, it's so silent here, isn't it David?' after 10 seconds.

Ah, the long-awaited first post. I mean yours, not the fact that I'm the first one to post a comment to this entry (Saw that somehow, Yvonne beat me in becoming the first commenter ever to the 2009 travels. I have to have a serious word with her). Anyway, news travels fast and everyone in Dublin seems to already be aware of the fact that entries have appeared here. I saw an ad on RTE One this morning announcing it, so that might have something to do with it.

Anyway, it sounds you two had an 'interesting' start to the 2009 version of your travels. To be honest, a whole new world opened up to me. The intriguing world of scammers, touts, bunkoes, cons, flim flams, gaffles, grifts (although this one did have a familiar ring to it), hustles, schemes, and swindles. The closest I have ever come to any of these was when Edel turned out to be a professional tipster at the Horse races in Leopardstown, years back... But that's a different story. As you know, India has never had a magnetic effect on me (although after seeing the pictures of, what's it called, McGyver Darj or so, I have to say that maybe my prejudice comes from the 'big cities in India being a tad crowded' images in my head. Anyway, brilliant to be able to dream the dream through your blog, so keep informing us!

Hey there! I was chatting with Pia last night, asking the link to your blog. Figured you'd have some marvelous adventure story up there by now :) And here it is!
The Delhi taxi stuff sounds a bit creepy I have to say. But Dharamsala sounds fantastic. Post lots of pics and stories so those who are still running rat race can enjoy your travels virtually.

Big hugs!!
Yvon
